Choosing the Right Lumber for Magic Valley Decks and Outdoor Projects

High UV exposure, low humidity, and cold winters make the Magic Valley tough on outdoor wood. Here's what actually holds up — and what to avoid.

Building an outdoor deck or fence in Twin Falls? Magic Valley's climate — intense summer UV, low humidity, and cold winters — is harder on lumber than most of Idaho. Here's what we've seen perform best over 37 years of selling to local contractors and homeowners.

Western Red Cedar: The Gold Standard

Cedar is naturally resistant to rot, insects, and moisture. A 5/4x6 cedar decking board at 16 feet handles the UV better than most alternatives. The trade-off is cost: cedar runs about $22 per 16-foot board. For a standard 12x16 deck, budget around $800–$1,000 for decking material alone.

**Twin Falls tip:** Cedar shrinks as it dries. Install boards with a 1/8" gap — by summer, they'll be perfect.

Pressure-Treated Pine: Best Value

For structural framing — posts, beams, joists — ground-contact pressure-treated lumber (rated UC4B or higher) is mandatory in Magic Valley's wet soil conditions. Our 4x4x8 posts at $12.99 are rated for ground contact and ACQ-compatible.

**Twin Falls tip:** ACQ-treated lumber corrodes standard fasteners. Use only hot-dipped galvanized or stainless-steel hardware, or our star-drive coated deck screws.

Composite: Low Maintenance, Higher Upfront

We special-order Trex and TimberTech composite decking. No staining, no splinters. Typically $4–$6 per linear foot more than cedar upfront, but lasts 25+ years with minimal maintenance. Popular with retirees and rental property owners in Jerome and Kimberly.

What to Avoid

Standard "whitewood" dimensional lumber from the big-box stores is not rated for exterior use and will twist, check, and rot within a season outdoors in our climate. If it doesn't say "pressure-treated" or "cedar," keep it inside.
